SEO: what is search engine optimization?

The most overused word in web marketing, explained for people who run a service business.

SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of making a website easier for search engines to find, understand and show in their unpaid results. It covers three areas: the technical health of the site, the usefulness of each page, and the signals that tell a search engine your business can be trusted.

In short

  • SEO targets the unpaid listings; pay-per-click advertising is a separate discipline.
  • Google states plainly that no trick will automatically rank a site first.
  • Being in Google's index is a prerequisite, and even that is not guaranteed.
  • The same groundwork now feeds AI-generated answers in search.

Where does the term SEO come from?

SEO stands for search engine optimization. Quebec's Office québécois de la langue française lists it alongside the French terms « référencement naturel » and « référencement organique », and defines the concept as the set of means used to improve how findable and how well placed online content is in search results, without paying per click [5].

The word organic, often used in English, does not mean slow or gentle. It simply refers to the listings a search engine shows outside the sponsored slots. What separates SEO from advertising is that nobody pays the engine for each visit.

In practice, a residential cleaning company in Gatineau is doing SEO when it makes sure a page called « House cleaning in Gatineau » exists, loads quickly on a phone, answers what customers actually ask, and is linked from the rest of the site.

What are the main areas of SEO work?

The three pillars of search engine optimization
PillarWhat gets checkedWhat it looks like for a service business
TechnicalCrawling, indexing, speed, mobile displayThe sitemap lists all 22 pages; no service page is blocked
ContentUseful pages that answer real questionsOne page per service with typical price ranges and lead times
ReputationLinks from other sites, reviews, consistent contact detailsA mention from the local business association; an up-to-date Google listing

Local SEO adds a fourth layer: the business listing and physical proximity to the searcher.

What does an SEO project look like in numbers?

How is SEO different from AEO and GEO?

Classic SEO aims at the list of blue links. AEO is about having your page supply the answer shown directly on the results page, such as a featured snippet. GEO looks at answers written by generative engines. Google says pages need no extra technical requirements to appear in its AI features beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet [3], so the SEO groundwork carries over.

Which SEO mistakes come up most often?

  • Cramming every service onto one page, so nothing matches a specific search.
  • Cloning the same text for each city and only swapping the town name.
  • Buying links, which Google's spam policies list as link spam [4].
  • Leaving a « block everything » rule in robots.txt after a redesign.
  • Judging success by one keyword's position instead of calls and quote requests.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO free?

Search engines do not charge for clicks on unpaid results. The work itself still costs something: writing time, technical fixes, sometimes an outside specialist. You pay for the effort rather than for each visit.

How long does SEO take to show results?

There is no fixed timeline. Google first has to crawl and index new pages, and rankings also depend on competing pages. Plan to track progress over several months rather than days.

Can a small business do its own SEO?

Mostly, yes. Clear pages for each service, accurate contact details, a current Google listing and answers to common questions go a long way. The technical side, such as sitemaps and markup, takes more know-how or a tool that generates it.

Does SEO still matter with AI answers in search?

Yes. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Good SEO is therefore the entry ticket, not an outdated tactic.

Is it SEO or search engine marketing?

Search engine marketing is the broader umbrella that includes both organic search and paid search ads. SEO is the unpaid part of it, as Quebec's terminology office also notes [6].

What is the difference between SEO and local SEO?

Local SEO is the slice of SEO that targets searches tied to a place, like « electrician near me ». It leans heavily on the business listing, distance and reviews, on top of the usual website work.
